Despite what you may have been told by charlatans selling fad diets, carbohydrates are an essential part of balanced nutrition. Carbs fuel your workouts and provide your body with its main source of energy. Everyone needs a sufficient intake of carbs to perform mentally and physically. Certain tissues and parts of the body—the brain, the central nervous system, and red blood cells—must have a constant supply of carbohydrates to function. The brain alone burns 600 calories' worth of glucose (a carbohydrate) per day just from thinking (some of us think more than others!).
"But just a few weeks ago you said to remove refined carbs from my diet!"
Yes, I did. Refined carbs have been stripped of protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. They are basically empty calories, which are digested quickly, causing spikes in blood sugar and leaving you feeling hungry again sooner. These include crackers, cookies, processed cereals, candy, and bread and pasta made from white flour. Keep avoiding those.
About 40% of your calories should come from carbohydrates
Most of the nutrition guides included with our fitness programs recommend getting about 40% off your calories from carbohydrates. This number varies for every person based on weight, age, and intensity of exercise. The key is to eat the right amount of the right kinds of carbs. Whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and Shakeology supply your body with the energy and nutrients it needs. Choose foods that are high in fiber, which adds bulk to your meals and makes them take longer to digest, so you feel full longer. Feeling satiated by these healthy carbs helps prevent you from reaching for junk food.
